Basking Lizards

This is the sight that greets me every morning when I go out to water the vegetable garden.

There are lizards all over our yard, and they especially seem to like the area around the compost bin where there are plenty of insects for them to snack on.

They love basking in the heat of the sun along the walls, and I am always happy to have them here.

The Arizona summer must be a lizard's idea of paradise. They are so cute the way the seem to have magical powers that enable them to hang around upside down like that. :)

Lizards are cool. I remember years ago when I was doing some extended camping out in the woods, every morning I would see this fat lizard basking in the sun. I'd be doing my dishes and talking to it and it would cock its head and watch me. Then a few days passed and I didn't see it. One morning, there it was! With about eight babies in tow. It was as if she was showing off her babies to her new found friend. Honest! That's a true story!

Amber, yes they do seem to like it here and are indeed gravity defying.

Gail, what a great story and what a great thing for you to see, that Mama with all her babies!

We actually found a tiny baby lizard in our kitchen this morning desperately trying to hide from the dogs. I managed to catch it and put it outside safely.

Oh, lizards are so much fun. I remember when I spent some times in the Philippines, it was fun to watch the lizards crawl all over the walls. They should be good for keeping the bug population down.

Judy, they are indeed great for keeping the bug population down! I have seen them snatch flies in mid air. Amazing.

Bo, they love the heat radiating from the wall because it heats them up too.
